Broomhill Community Library - Pike Studio - Community garden in Sheffield

Broomhill Community Library

Pike Studio have been commissioned to reimagine the lost Brommhill Library gardens into a new and thriving public green space in Sheffield.

The gardens at 10 Taptonville Road, in the Sheffield suburb of Broomhill, are located on three sides of a detached Victorian villa which since 2014, has been a volunteer-run library. The gardens were created in the mid-to late-1920s in an Arts & Crafts style by eminent English garden designer Percy Cane for the industrialist Arthur Samuel Lee. Much of the garden was lost when the council owned site became unmanageable but in recent years the Broomhill Community Trust have set an ambitious goal to restore the gardens to their former glory for the working library to use as a free-to-access public garden and appointed Pike Studio to carry out the designs in 2024.

Our design rationale for the garden focuses around our key aims of combining heritage, wellbeing and learning in this new library space. All ethos Pike Studio share with Broomhill Library. This project is part of our Landscapes for Change initiative.

We are collaborating with Thread Architects who are completing new architectural works to make the library more accessible with an extension to provide more flexible space for the library to hold events.
